Often, we are the ones who choose the animals who will share a life with us. But sometimes, it’s the animals themselves who do the choosing.

A few months ago, Picaso was up for adoption in a West Virginia shelter.

One night, he took part in an ‘adoption parade’, where adoptable dogs are walked by volunteers for potential adopters to see.

Adoptable dog rushes to girl in need

Though Picaso was a friendly and affectionate dog with everyone, he walked calmly by his volunteer’s side during the parade. That is, until he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb. As soon as he saw her, he pulled on the lead and practically dragged his volunteer towards her.

As he sat in front of the clearly upset 16-year-old, he pressed his face against hers, almost supporting her. The girl, named Abby, started to smile and pet Picaso. Abby’s mum then explained that her daughter suffered from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a health condition that impacts her blood flow and can cause her to faint. It can also cause panic attacks; much like the one she was having that night.

Fateful meeting

Abby’s mum quickly rushed her daughter home as soon as she started feeling better, but she couldn’t stop thinking about how Picaso had helped her. He had instantly seen that Abby needed assistance and knew exactly how to be there for her. If he hadn’t, Abby would’ve probably fainted and fallen to the floor. But by supporting her with his head, he kept from taking a dangerous fall.

The next day, Abby and her mum went to the shelter and asked to see Picaso. When Picaso saw Abby again, he instantly rushed to her and got up on his hind legs to give her a big bear hug. In that moment, it was clear for everyone: Picaso belonged in that family.

Picaso was adopted right then and there and has been beyond happy ever since.
