There is a bizarre trend that has gone viral on social media, it’s called the beaning challenge. The concept? People spread baked beans on cars and driveways and film the result, which is generally very messy and then post it on social media. Whether you find this funny or not, police have warned shop owners to be vigilant for children buying a lot of baked beans and parents have to keep an eye open on their children.
Dog owners, you should also be extremely careful as vets and veterinary nurses have said the beaning challenge spreading on TikTok could be fatal to dogs.
Why is this new TikTok challenge dangerous for dogs?
Becky Williams, A veterinary nurse, told Wales Online: "Baked beans may contain onion and garlic, which is toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure, which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal discomfort. They're also high in sugar, which can upset dogs with pre-existing conditions like diabetes. The high fat levels can trigger a pancreatitis flare, especially in dogs that have had it or are prone to it”
Keep a close eye on your dog when you take him out for a walk. Make sure your pooch doesn’t eat anything from the floor or something he has found outside, you never know.
"What's more worrying, is that if the beans are left to go mouldy, the mycotoxins released can cause seizures in dogs, and even prove fatal, which is devastating for owners” added Becky.
People who take part in this prank should think about the effects it could have on others and especially dogs. It might make you laugh for a moment, but it could result in a worrying trip to the vet for a dog.
