Rescuers find a dog lost in a storm: her microchip solves a 12-year-old mystery

By Ludivine Mazzotti

Twelve years ago in northern Chicago, Vanessa Antonio went off to work as usual, leaving her four-year-old dog, Flor, in her car.

At the time, Vanessa was going through a tough patch and was living in her car with her beloved dog.

But sadly, when she returned from work that day, Flor was gone. Despite searching everywhere, Vanessa could find no trace of her dog.

Never forgotten

Over the years, Vanessa never stopped thinking about Flor. She went on to have four children and regularly showed them photos of Flor, introducing her as their "big sister". Even though she eventually came to believe she would probably never see her sweet dog again, she never completely gave up hope.

Then, in 2026, fate decided to bring these two precious souls back together. Flor was recently found in Gary, Indiana, following a violent storm. A kind passerby spotted the dog wandering near busy roads, where she was in danger of being hit by a car.

The microchip that changed everything

Flor was taken in by Griffith Animal Control before a volunteer organisation called Microchip Hunters stepped in. In Flor's case, the phone number linked to her microchip was no longer active. However, the determined volunteers managed to track down her original family and arrange a heartwarming reunion with Vanessa.

When Vanessa was finally reunited with Flor after twelve years apart, the emotion in the room was overwhelming, as you can see in the video below. We are absolutely delighted that Flor is finally back with her family, and we wish her a wonderfully peaceful time ahead!
