The incident took place on 18 July in Angers, western France. With outdoor temperatures soaring past 30°C (86°F), worried passers-by called the emergency services. They spotted a dog left all alone inside a vehicle parked in direct sunlight. With every passing minute, the car was turning into a deadly trap.
Both national and municipal police officers rushed to the scene. There, they found the poor animal in obvious distress. The dog was panting heavily, showing clear signs of heatstroke and exhaustion. The situation was critical.
A life-saving intervention
Knowing time was running out, the officers desperately tried to track down the owner of the car, but they were nowhere to be found. With the dog's life hanging in the balance, there was not a second to lose.
"With no sign of the owner and given how exhausted the dog was, the officers decided to smash one of the car windows to get him out," the national police reported on their Facebook page. This quick-thinking action successfully freed the dog from his metal oven and brought him to safety.
A vital reminder for all pet owners
Once rescued, the dog was immediately handed over to the SPAA (the local animal protection society in Angers) to receive the urgent care he needed. Meanwhile, the owner was summoned to the police station to face questioning over this act of serious neglect.
The police have used this rescue to issue a vital warning to all pet owners: "Never leave your pet alone in a car, even for just a few minutes." Within moments, temperatures inside a parked car can soar to dangerous levels, putting our beloved four-legged friends' lives at risk. It is a warning that we can only hope people will take seriously.
