Joshua was driving along a road near Knysna, in South Africa, when he spotted a Golden Retriever on the roadside.
The young man and his friend Rubin immediately pulled over to help the dog, who clearly seemed to be in trouble.
The Golden Retriever walked straight up to the two men. Even though they were in the middle of a road trip, the pair couldn't possibly leave her alone on the side of the road.
They decided to pick her up and take her straight to the nearest vet. When scanning her microchip, the friends discovered that the dog was an 11-year-old named Mia. She had actually been missing for seven weeks.
A heart-wrenching backstory
Her previous owner had passed away, and their family was looking after the dog. After speaking with the family, Rubin explained that they agreed she should stay with him. He decided to adopt her straight away.
"She is incredibly gentle, affectionate and loving, and she is particularly wonderful with children."
Multiple cancerous tumours
At the vet's surgery, several cancerous tumours were discovered. Fortunately, the dog was able to undergo surgery, and her recovery went very smoothly.
Today, the Golden Retriever is living happily with her new family.
