This is a story with a happy ending, and it's nothing short of a small miracle. In the Vendée region of France, three volunteer firefighters from Mouilleron-Saint-Germain were returning from a previous call-out when they spotted smoke billowing from a house.
Without a moment's hesitation, they raised the alarm and went to investigate. As they approached the property, they could already see the flames. A neighbour then rushed over to give them a crucial piece of information: the owners weren't home, but there were animals trapped inside. Time was running out.
A rescue beyond all expectations
To get into the house, the firefighters had to break a glass door. As soon as they had made an opening, three dogs, frightened but safe and sound, rushed outside to safety. It was a huge first victory, but their mission wasn't over yet.
An unexpected discovery
The firefighters knew there were also cats inside. Making their way through was difficult because, as Chief Warrant Officer Samuel Girard explained, "the smoke was getting lower and lower." That's when the rescue took a heart-wrenching turn. "We'd been told there were kittens. They were scattered all over the place [...] every time we moved further inside, we found another one."
One by one, the rescuers found and brought to safety a litter of eight tiny kittens, barely a week old. It was a real race against time to reunite all the siblings. Shortly afterwards, the owners arrived on the scene. They were distraught, but incredibly relieved to be reunited with their 11 companions, all of whom were unharmed thanks to the courage of these everyday heroes.
