Tragedy was narrowly averted under the scorching sun. On Wednesday, 8th July 2026, in the car park of the Movie Park Germany theme park in Bottrop-Kirchhellen, western Germany, the vigilance and quick thinking of a Dutch visitor saved the life of a dog locked inside a car that had turned into a sweltering oven.
As reported by Le Parisien, the witness noticed a dog suffocating inside a car with all its windows closed. The animal's tongue was hanging out, it was panting frantically and salivating excessively – all clear signs of imminent and potentially fatal heatstroke.
At this time of year, the temperature inside a car can rise at a staggering rate.
A race against time
Faced with the urgent situation, and seeing the animal's condition deteriorating rapidly, the good Samaritan didn't hesitate.
According to the Essen veterinary ambulance service, quoted by HLN, the dog's body temperature had reached 39°C inside the car.
After trying to alert park staff and the police, he made the decision to smash one of the car's windows to get the distressed dog out, supported by other passers-by.
"We saved his life"
Once freed, the dog, which was completely dehydrated and exhausted, was immediately taken to the nearest veterinary clinic.
He was given cool water to gently bring his body temperature down. "We saved his life," said the Dutch national, still shocked by the owners' irresponsibility.
A complaint has been filed against the dog's owner. In Germany, leaving an animal in a hot car can result in a fine of up to €25,000 (around £21,000) and a three-year prison sentence if the act is deemed intentional, HLN reports.
