Rescuers expect to find one injured dog, but 84 dogs and two cats are crammed inside

By Ludivine Mazzotti•

Last year in England, when RSPCA rescuers heard about a dog suffering from an untreated broken leg, they went to investigate.

When they rang the doorbell, nobody came to the door.

However, even standing on the doorstep, they could see that the property was in a very worrying state.

Squalid living conditions

After obtaining a warrant to enter the property, the rescuers returned with police officers. As soon as they stepped inside, they discovered an unimaginable scene: 84 English Springer Spaniels crammed inside the house amidst the filth.

There were around 25 dogs in the kitchen and over 30 crammed on the stairs, with the rest spread throughout the other rooms. When the rescuers arrived, the dogs watched them, barking nervously. The owners explained that things had got out of hand since the Covid-19 pandemic. They finally agreed to sign over all 84 dogs and the two cats to the RSPCA.

Health checks and rehabilitation

Many of the dogs had never learned to walk on a lead, and several had to be carried into the RSPCA vehicles. The rescuers then took them to four different veterinary clinics. The dogs were suffering from ear infections and severe malnutrition.

Fortunately, a year later, all but one of the dogs have found new homes. We wish them all the very best as they enjoy their new, safe, and cosy forever families!
