This is a story that begins with a closed door. In Châteaudun, France, a veterinary practice shut its doors overnight, with just a simple note citing a ”family emergency”. But behind this sudden closure lay a much more worrying reality. A local animal welfare charity was alerted and went to the premises, accompanied by a town councillor.
As they opened the door, their shock was immediate. A terrible smell and an indescribable mess greeted the rescuers. But the most heartbreaking sight was something else entirely: dozens of pairs of eyes staring back at them from the gloom. In total, 35 cats of all ages and colours had been left behind, fending for themselves in deplorable sanitary conditions.
A remarkable effort to save them
Faced with this emergency, the community rallied together with incredible speed. The councillor immediately handed the keys to the premises over to the charity les chats mail, whose volunteers worked tirelessly in shifts to feed and water the animals every day.
A former employee of the clinic, who had previously tried to raise the alarm, provided invaluable help. Her account helped to explain how the situation had deteriorated so badly; the vet, clearly overwhelmed, had been hoarding animals she wanted to save but lacked the resources to care for. Thanks to everyone's efforts, not a single one of the 35 cats was lost.
A new beginning for 35 survivors
Today, all 35 survivors are safe, but the battle isn't over. The local charity, despite its dedication, cannot house them all. It has therefore appealed to major national organisations like the SPA and the 30 Millions d'Amis Foundation to help manage their care and find them forever homes.
This story, which could have ended in tragedy, has instead become a wonderful outpouring of generosity. For these 35 little felines, it's the start of a new chapter, far from confinement and full of the promise of cuddles and cosy beds.
