Dog locked in car boot in 30°C heat: owner faces police action (video)

By Ludivine Mazzotti

A young woman's treatment of her dog has caused an uproar on social media.

A young woman left her dog locked in the boot of her car in an underground car park.

The dog had no access to water.

A suffocating temperature

The act is all the more shocking given that temperatures are currently exceeding 30°C. Trapped inside a travel crate in the car boot, the dog was enduring terrible suffering. Dogs cannot sweat, which means they have no way of releasing heat and cooling down.

Vets constantly remind owners never to leave a dog in a car, not even in the shade, with a window open, or for just five minutes.

Police intervention

The police intervened and contacted the owner of the vehicle and the dog. The young woman opened the boot, at which point officers reminded her of the laws concerning animal cruelty and neglect.

In France, neglecting an animal in a way that endangers its health or safety can result in a fine of up to 750 euros. If the animal is found to have suffered, the penalty can increase to up to 3 years in prison and a 45,000 euro fine, or even 5 years in prison and a 75,000 euro fine if the animal dies.
