To carry out the rescue, the team had to call for backup from their colleagues at the local animal control, as well as from Last Chance Pet Rescue and Saving Kittens Sanctuary.
In a Facebook post, the rescuers explained that they had responded to a call about a colony of stray cats living on an abandoned property.
130 sick and stray cats
Several females in the colony had recently given birth to litters of kittens, and the situation had become critical. When they arrived on the scene, the rescuers realised there were far more cats than they had anticipated.
In total, they rescued 130 cats from this dreadful situation, including 62 kittens under five weeks old. Sadly, almost all the cats were thin and unwell. Most of them were suffering from quite severe respiratory infections.
A desperate plea for help
The rescue teams brought the cats to safety, but they posted on social media about their urgent need for foster families to care for the kittens and provide all the necessary treatment.
The next day, Sunday, 26th April, the rescuers returned to the site and saved another 26 stray cats. The rescue centres have said they are accepting donations to help cover the costs of caring for all the cats. We are so relieved that the cats are finally safe and hope they recover and regain their strength as quickly as possible.
