Eight cats locked in a taped box in a heatwave: the worst was yet to come

By Ludivine Mazzotti

Staff at the Madison County Animal Shelter in the US have made a heartbreaking and deeply cruel discovery.

With outdoor temperatures soaring to around 35°C, a plastic crate was found abandoned just yards from the shelter's doors.

The box had been carefully sealed shut with heavy-duty tape. For the rescue team, this was an incredibly worrying sign...

A devastating discovery

Sadly, the rescuers' fears were confirmed. Inside, eight poor cats were trapped. They found two adult cats and six tiny kittens, with absolutely no way of escaping their plastic prison.

Tragically, despite the quick actions of the shelter staff, the two adults and three of the kittens did not survive. Only three of the little creatures were saved in time. They are now being cared for at the shelter, where they are receiving all the love and medical attention they need to recover from this horrific ordeal.

An appeal for information

According to the ongoing investigation, the crate is believed to have been dumped near the shelter between late morning and early afternoon on 27th July. Rescuers have launched an appeal on Facebook, asking anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward with any information they might have. Every single detail matters to help identify a vehicle or the person responsible.

We hope with all our hearts that the three surviving kittens make a speedy recovery. We wish them a happy, peaceful life ahead, far away from the horrors they have faced in their very first weeks of life.
