Staff hold their breath over a shocking discovery in a DIY store's flower aisle

Customers at this DIY store certainly weren't expecting this kind of special offer. Tucked away between two aisles, a mother cat had turned a flower pot into a makeshift nursery for her kittens.

The story began in early April at a Home Depot store in Tampa, Florida (USA). Staff noticed an unusual presence in one of the outdoor aisles: a mother cat had made her home in a large flower pot to protect her newborn kittens. Touched by her plight, the staff began to feed the little family and even put up a sign asking customers not to disturb them.

Aware that the store was not a safe long-term home, the employees contacted Kamila Muxitake, a volunteer with the St. Francis Society Animal Rescue. When she arrived, the rescuer found a mother cat who was relaxed but wary. To pull off this delicate rescue surrounded by customers, Kamila knew she would have to be extremely discreet.

A rescue "in socks" to a round of applause

As she was setting up a humane trap with some food inside, Kamila ran into a technical problem: the door wouldn't close. The mother cat was inside, but the slightest noise could scare her off, causing her to abandon her kittens. It was then that the rescuer made a radical decision, as reported by The Dodo.

She took off her shoes so she wouldn't make any noise on the shop floor. In a pin-drop silence observed by both customers and staff, she crept barefoot behind the cage and manually closed the door. A thunderous round of applause and cheers erupted in the aisle! Kamila could finally retrieve the precious kittens, about three weeks old, who had stayed warm and snug in their flower pot.

A super-mum with a big heart

Once at the shelter, the little family was examined. They were all in excellent health, proof that their mum had gone to great lengths to care for them while living as a stray. But the story doesn't end there. A few days later, the shelter took in a litter of orphaned kittens. Without hesitation, the team introduced the little ones to the "Home Depot mum".

Her maternal instincts kicked in instantly: she accepted them as her own, nursing and cleaning them with the same tenderness she showed her own kittens. For now, the large family doesn't have official names yet, but customers from the store have suggested naming them after flowers. As soon as they are old enough, they will all be vaccinated, microchipped, and put up for adoption to start their new lives far away from the DIY aisles.
