Some encounters can change a life, and for one little dog hiding in the shadows, this was her last chance.
In October 2022, volunteers from the Takis Shelter in Crete, Greece, were called to help a stray dog.
There, in the bushes, they found the animal, who seemed to have been on her own for several months.
The dog, later named Nala, was so severely malnourished that her ribs and hips were protruding through her fur.
A long road to recovery
The rescue was just the first step. She was rushed to a veterinary clinic, where she was diagnosed with pyometra, a serious uterine infection, and diabetes, on top of her severe malnutrition.
Nala needed emergency surgery, and her carers feared she wouldn't wake up from it.
Fortunately, the operation was a complete success and helped to relieve Nala's pain. It took several weeks for the little dog to start getting her strength back.
A stunning transformation
As she slowly gained weight, Nala's true personality began to shine through. Hidden beneath the dirt and effects of starvation was a dog of rare elegance, with large, expressive eyes and a silky white coat flecked with cinnamon.
It has now been just over three years since Nala was rescued. Today, she is thriving with her family, and that's what truly matters.
