When their cat started staring intently out of the window, a family in Maryland, USA, knew something unusual was happening outside.

Last summer, Derek Thomas from Rockville, USA, adopted a cat named Lucy. Since she arrived, the whole family has enjoyed getting to know the lively and expressive personality of their new four-legged friend.

"She's a very sweet, active, playful, and chatty cat," Derek told The Dodo. One of her favourite pastimes is watching the world go by from the living room window, especially the squirrels and other neighbourhood cats.

Unusual behaviour catches their eye

Lucy makes a very specific sound whenever she spots an animal outside, a sort of distinctive little chirp. So, when Colleen and the children heard her making this noise one morning, they knew immediately that something had caught her attention.

Colleen then pulled back the curtains. Right outside the window, curled up on the ground, was a deer. If it hadn't been for Lucy's persistence, the family would probably never have noticed the animal's presence.

A fascinating encounter

Lucy began to stare at the deer, trying to get as close as possible to get a better look. When the animal stood up, the cat tried to climb the wall and the window so she wouldn't miss a thing.

To everyone's surprise, the deer seemed just as intrigued by Lucy. At one point, the two animals came face to face, separated only by the glass, and shared a long look. After a few minutes, the deer eventually moved away, leaving the family to wonder if it would ever return. But that very evening, they were in for a big surprise.

The deer returned for one last goodbye before continuing on its way.
