As Crufts returns to Birmingham this week, the spotlight won’t just be on pedigree perfection in the show ring.
Among the most moving moments is the Hero Dog Award, which celebrates extraordinary canine companions who have made a life-changing difference to their humans.
The five finalists
Through life's ups and downs, working Cocker Spaniel Joey has kept Ciara going, encouraging her to keep fit and even train for the London Marathon, in memory of her sister who tragically passed away.
Also in line for the award is Asha, an eight-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier who is her best friend Logan's constant companion. Logan is a full-time wheelchair user, who lives with cerebral palsy. Devoted Asha never leaves his side.
Making history as Europe's first digital detection dog is Tweed, a Springer Spaniel who can find devices in areas humans could never reach. Alongside PC Martin King, she works to help keep humans safe on a daily basis.
Then there's Iggy, a rescue dog from Turkey who faced serious mobility issues when he was first found. He now brings happiness to community spaces, spending his days offering gentle companionship to non-verbal patients.
Also a rescue, Skittles was fearful and anxious when Maggie first adopted her. But thanks to plenty of love and care, she is now thriving in her new home. These days she visits nurseries, schools and care homes, helping brighten everyone's day.
Voting for a hero
From life-changing support to heartwarming acts of bravery, these dogs have all had a very special impact on the lives of those around them.
Voting for the 2026 hero is currently still open. The winner will be crowned on Sunday the 8th of March in Birmingham.
