When Benjamin was found on the side of a road, it seemed like his story would have a happy ending. The little dog was safe, being cared for, and most importantly... he was microchipped. A detail that usually changes everything.
But this time, the phone call to the number linked to the chip would shatter that hope.
"It's not our dog"
Benjamin had been discovered by the husband of a social media user, who found him alone and abandoned on the roadside. The news spread quickly on Facebook. The post was shared, commented on, and reposted, but no one came forward to claim him.
That's when Shelly Straub entered the picture. Three years earlier, she had lost Marshmellow, her 'heart dog', who had meant the world to her.
Moved by the story of this little dog found so close to her home, Shelly decided to take him in. She named him Benjamin. But before she could close the chapter on his past for good, one final check was needed: the microchip.
The vet called the registered number. The reply was blunt and immediate: "It's not our dog." Four words that sealed his fate with his former family.
A double blow for Benjamin
However, the chip did reveal one crucial piece of information: Benjamin was only about 15 months old. He was still very young. A veterinary examination also uncovered a worrying reality: he had intestinal parasites, giardiasis, and hadn't been neutered. These were all signs that the dog had been neglected.
For Shelly, there was no turning back. A new life was beginning for her and Benjamin, one that felt like it was meant to be.
