An animal rescue charity was contacted to help some animals in distress. When they opened the door of the house, they never expected to uncover such a horrific scene.

Helping animals in distress is an experience that stays with you, and the rescuers at the Brandywine Valley SPCA in the USA know this all too well.

A shocking discovery

They were recently called out to rescue what they thought were 50 dogs from a run-down house.

But when the team arrived, they discovered the situation was far worse. Inside, they found not 50, but at least 76 dogs and puppies, 9 cats, and even a budgie.

As reported by The Dodo, the poor animals were terrified and trembling. They were also covered in fleas and suffering from severe skin problems.

A fresh start for the survivors

After a visit to the vet to get them the care they needed, the survivors were put up for adoption. It wasn't long before most of the dogs and cats found their forever homes.

Just 5 dogs and 6 cats are still at the SPCA, waiting for a loving family to call their own.
