Here's a remarkable story. Abby, a Golden Retriever cross, was on her way to her new home when she suddenly made a run for it.
As reported by People magazine, the dog, who had been living in a rescue centre in South Carolina, USA, was being transported to her new family when she escaped from a service station.
An AirTag and a drone
Everything changed during a simple break at a service station on the New Jersey Turnpike. Seizing a moment of inattention, the dog bolted. Terrified, she darted across one of the busiest motorways in the United States, at times crossing up to 25 lanes of traffic. For more than 24 hours, Abbie covered nearly 26 miles in a hostile and noisy environment.
Numerous officers worked closely together to help the dog. One officer "spent hours in the woods searching, alongside at least six other officers working on both sides of the area," a statement said, describing the effort as "a true testament to teamwork, determination, and compassion in action."
Abbie was taken to a veterinary clinic in New Jersey, where she was treated for a hip and ligament injury, as well as some road rash.
The final twist: a heartfelt decision
Abbie's story ends with a wonderful surprise. After this traumatic ordeal and her incredible show of resilience, her foster family made a life-changing decision.
Deeply moved by her journey, they decided they couldn't let her go: they officially adopted Abbie. After running 26 miles to escape the unknown, the dog finally found her forever home right where she already felt she belonged.
