A 78-year-old woman from Lincoln, Nebraska, in the United States, has fallen victim to a large-scale scam.
Tragically, the woman was conned while trying to buy a puppy on social media.
A devastating scam
It all began on the 15th of December on Facebook. The woman wanted to buy a Pug puppy, initially advertised for $500. The seller then asked her to pay additional fees for the puppy.
Over the following days, the woman continued to make payments using Bitcoin and gift cards. In the end, between the 15th and 23rd of December, she had spent a staggering $14,000, but she never received her puppy...
A crucial warning
Following this major scam, the local Sheriff's Office held a press conference to issue an important reminder. As a preventative measure, every Bitcoin ATM in Lincoln must now display a warning sticker about scams.
The police also advised buyers to do their research before purchasing anything online. They strongly recommended that anyone looking to get a pet should consider adopting from local animal shelters instead.
