Devon: Urgent warning as dogs and foxes fall ill after poisoned food in park

Dog owners are being urged to exercise extreme caution after reports of poisoned food left at a popular park in Exeter, Devon.

Police confirmed at least one dog has died, with two others falling ill, following visits to Cowick Barton Playing Fields. 

Additionally, four foxes were found dead in the area.

Warning to owners

A warning notice at the park entrance advised pet owners: “1 dog dead, 2 dogs sick, 4 foxes dead. Reports of poisoned food in Barton Fields. This is illegal. If your dog or cat ingests poison, take to a vet immediately to induce vomiting.”

Exeter Police stated that they are investigating the incidents but have not confirmed the cause of the animals’ illness. They asked anyone with information to contact them via 101 or their online reporting form, quoting occurrence 50250208201. 

Residents were advised to remain vigilant while walking pets in the park.

The warning follows a recent case in Scotland where a family’s dog died after suspected cannabis poisoning on a local nature reserve, highlighting the ongoing risks posed by contaminated food in public spaces. 

Authorities remind pet owners to stay alert and report any suspicious items immediately to protect animals from harm.
