A fox red Labrador has become an unlikely viral sensation and a spoof Oscar nominee, after a prank involving a lion wig caused chaos and laughter in equal measure.

Red, a seven-year-old Labrador, is travelling the world with his owner, Bobby Bolton, in an 18-tonne converted truck.

During a stop in Africa, Bobby decided it was finally time to put a little lion wig to use, with hilarious results.

Licked to death

In a now-viral Instagram video, a man and woman spot what appears to be a lion racing toward them. They dive into their truck in a panic, only to realise moments later that the "lion" is, of course, Red, trotting over with his tail wagging.

“We almost got licked to death,” Bobby joked in the caption.

A zebra next?

Bobby, who left Wigan last October in search of a new purpose, has been documenting his journey on @one.life.truck.it.

Two weeks into his trip, he met Marie Deleval in the South of France. She and her dog Rubia have since joined him on the adventure.

With Red’s performance earning an Oscar nomination in jest, fans are already anticipating a sequel, possibly starring Rubia as a zebra.
