On Monday 16th June 2025, in the afternoon, an animal protection charity called "Association Chat Qu'un Son Toit Poitiers", based in Vienne, France, made an emotional plea on their Facebook page.
Just minutes after announcing they could no longer take in kittens due to lack of space, the team nonetheless opened their doors to a mother and her four babies, victims of a cowardly abandonment.
A cardboard box left outside a couple's gate
It was a young couple living in the commune of Lavoux who discovered the little family outside their gate. The cats had been left there, dumped in a simple cardboard box, at the mercy of all manner of dangers.
Unable to turn a blind eye to this mother's distress, the charity agreed to help, especially as the kittens' age made the situation all the more delicate: aged just 1 to 2 days old, they experienced human cruelty from their very first moments. In their social media post, the charity condemned the cowardly abandonment, carried out without any thought for the animals' safety. The cat, gentle but lost, seemed completely bewildered when she was taken into care.
A beautiful story of adoption
Thankfully, they're now safe, and there are already the makings of a lovely story: the couple who found them immediately offered to adopt the cat once she's weaned her little ones. A gesture the charity praised, reminding us that whilst kittens often find homes quickly, adult mothers don't fare so well.
Faced with yet another abandonment, the charity reminds us that shelters are overflowing and calls on everyone to be responsible: one more birth means one more life in danger.
