While the veterinary profession often appeals to animal lovers, we sometimes overlook the emotional challenges it can present.
Daily exposure to animal suffering is tough enough, but vets also encounter a different kind of difficulty, when pet owners act carelessly or even cruelly towards their animals.
Owners make a shocking request
Working at Noah’s Ark clinic in Ohio, Dr Matt McGlasson is no stranger to these situations. But one day, eight years ago, a consultation left a lasting mark on his life.
Dr McGlasson had been treating a tiny Bichon-type puppy for a range of health problems. The pup was so small she didn’t even weigh a kilogram and could fit in his hand.
After initial visits for parasites and a possible parvovirus infection, the puppy returned a third time, this time with an unexpected twist. Despite having paid a significant sum for the puppy from a luxury breeder, the owners said they were tired of spending money on treatment and wanted the vet to euthanise her. She was just a few months old.
Shocked, Dr McGlasson gently tried to change their minds and explained that he was uncomfortable with their request. But when the owners realised he wouldn’t agree, they abruptly asked if he would like to adopt the puppy instead.
He didn’t need more than a few seconds to say yes.
Chickie finds her forever home
The vet took the little dog in, naming her Chickie. His plan was to nurse her back to health and eventually find her a new family. However, things didn’t go as planned.
Completely smitten with the sweet-natured pup, Dr McGlasson decided to keep her by his side for good.
Now, eight years later, Chickie is a much-loved companion. She travels with her owner to professional conferences, charms audiences, and has even gained fans online too.
Loved everywhere she goes, Chickie’s story is a powerful reminder of how kindness and second chances can change everything.
