While driving down a highway in New York this past January, a man spotted an unassuming brown paper bag lying by the roadside. But as he passed, a single word scrawled across it made him do a double-take and what he found inside left him speechless.
The bag was marked “cats”. Disbelieving that anyone would actually leave animals inside, he stopped to check. To his shock, nestled inside were three tiny kittens, wide-eyed and silent.
"Scared and hissy"
Realising they needed help fast, the man rushed them to AMA Animal Rescue in Brooklyn.
“They were scared and hissy at first, clearly traumatised,” said Mariya Vlasova, co-founder of the rescue. “But if there's one thing our volunteers love, it’s a challenge.”
Rescuers gently coaxed the kittens out of their shells. Before long, they were confident, playful, and bouncing off the walls with energy.
Happy ending for kittens
“They transformed into athletes, bouncing off walls and each other,” Vlasova said.
The kittens, Twilight, Midnight and Eclipse, were soon adopted into loving homes, two together and one by a volunteer’s family.
“His small act gave these kittens a whole new future,” Vlasova said.
We hope the kittens enjoy happy lives in their new homes.
