Reddit user Nathaniel, a hospital employee, was carrying out routine chores when he noticed something odd.
Although the greenhouse doors were firmly shut, a quick inspection revealed a cheeky intruder had found its way inside, apparently via a skylight.
Feasting on catnip
To Nathaniel’s amusement, the culprit turned out to be a local cat in a full euphoric trance, blissfully feasting on catnip grown by patients as part of a therapeutic gardening programme.
“The whole scene was as unexpected as it was hilarious,” Nathaniel shared. “I’ve never seen the cat before. We get a few at work, but never like this.”
Catnip, known scientifically as Nepeta cataria, contains nepetalactone, a compound that triggers a euphoric reaction in many felines. And judging by the cat’s behaviour, it was a particularly potent batch.
Delightful visitor
Rather than disturb the surprise guest, Nathaniel chose compassion over eviction. “I made sure he can stay safe and left the greenhouse doors open,” he said. “He was absolutely delightful.”
While there’s no telling if the cat will return for another hit, the greenhouse doors may now remain ajar, just in case.
