Alison Hammond has spoken out against the backlash she faced after replacing the late Paul O’Grady on For The Love Of Dogs.

The This Morning star took over presenting duties in April 2024, following O’Grady’s passing in 2023.

However, some viewers criticised her, questioning her connection with animals as she does not own a dog.

Surprised by backlash

Addressing the criticism, Alison told Heat magazine: “I was surprised by how much I got. It’s like saying you can’t love children if you don’t have kids.”

She further defended herself on the Parenting Hell podcast, explaining that her busy schedule makes dog ownership impractical: “I wouldn’t be around, it would be unfair. But I love dogs, which is why I did the show.”

Raising awareness for rescue dogs

Despite the initial negativity, Alison remains committed to the programme and its mission to find homes for rescue dogs. “Paul was incredible, but I did it for the dogs,” she said.

For The Love Of Dogs has been a hit since 2012, winning multiple awards.

While Alison’s debut series received mixed reviews, she is determined to continue raising awareness for rescue dogs.
