As they got closer, they couldn’t believe their eyes; inside were crammed three abandoned dogs, left without food or water.
The dogs were rescued on 24 February and placed in the care of Bassetlaw District Council.
Out of date microchip
Although the dogs were microchipped, their details were outdated, making it impossible to trace their owners.
Despite this, there has been overwhelming interest in rehoming them, with enquiries coming from as far as Surrey and Norfolk. Paula Clarkstone, who discovered the dogs, described her disbelief and hoped they would find a loving home.
The Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, which manages the reserve, also condemned the abandonment.
New homes for pup trio
The council kept the dogs in its designated kennels for eight days, but no one came forward to claim them. A spokesperson confirmed the dogs are in good health and the process of finding them new homes has begun.
Thanks to widespread media and social media attention, the dogs are expected to be rehomed soon, with the council’s appointed kennels managing the adoption process.
