When rescuers from the Kent County Animal Shelter arrived at a car park in Michigan, they were met with a heartbreaking sight.

A small black dog stood alone, trembling, with only a collar and a handwritten note attached.

The message was simple but devastating: "My name is Rukey. Please help me, bring me home."

A cry for help

The rescuers knew they had to act fast. Looking into Rukey’s bright, pleading eyes, they could see the fear and confusion in the little dog's face. But despite being abandoned, she remained gentle and trusting, instantly capturing their hearts.

Back at the shelter, Rukey quickly charmed staff with her sweet nature. Deeply moved by her situation, they shared her story on Facebook, using the opportunity to send a message to her former owner:

"To the person who had to make the heartbreaking decision to let her go, know that Rukey is safe and deeply loved by our staff. Her sweet personality has already won our hearts, and we will ensure she is cared for and finds a wonderful, loving family."

Help available for struggling owners

The shelter also took the opportunity to remind struggling pet owners that help is available. Many organisations offer support, including emergency pet food aid, connections to social services, and financial assistance for boarding fees.

Rukey’s story quickly gained attention online. Dozens of people expressed interest in adopting her, while others showed compassion for her previous owner. One person wrote:

"This could happen to anyone. We must support each other through difficult times."

For now, Rukey is safe and loved, and it won’t be long before she finds her forever home.
