In 2012, Chubby the cat left home and never returned. Owner Donna Gallacher was devastated, but she always felt her beloved cat was out there somewhere.

Donna launched frantic searches in the days following Chubby's disappearance, but they yielded no results. The cat was nowhere to be found. No one had seen him; it was as if he had vanished into thin air.

Despite the heartbreak, Donna never gave up hope. She believed deep down that Chubbs, as she affectionately called him, was still alive and missing home.

She had searched high and low, but as time passed, it became harder to hold onto hope. Still, a small part of her refused to give up entirely.

In Greater Manchester, 400 km north of Donna's home, a stray cat had been hanging around a school for some time. Locals assumed the feline belonged to one of the children.

Eventually, a hedgehog rescuer noticed the cat and decided to intervene. She brought the stray to a vet for a check-up. To her surprise, the vet discovered that the cat had a microchip. This elderly, toothless feline had an owner – and they lived hundreds of kilometres away.

A life-changing email

The vet contacted Donna with the news: Chubby was alive. When Donna read the email, she was overwhelmed with emotion. After a decade of uncertainty, her long-lost cat had been found.

Chubby wasn’t in the best shape, having developed kidney problems, but thanks to the care he received, he made a remarkable recovery. Soon, he was reunited with Donna, ready to spend his golden years in the comfort of his original home.

This incredible story highlights the vital role microchipping plays in reuniting lost pets with their owners. It also serves as a reminder that it’s always worth holding onto hope – sometimes, miracles happen when you least expect them.
