They discovered six American Staffordshire Terrier puppies hidden in the boot of a vehicle, illegally smuggled into Germany from the Netherlands in 2019.
The puppies, all barely five weeks old, had been purchased in Amsterdam for €300 each.
Illegal transportation
Lacking the necessary vaccination records and documents, the young dogs were being transported despite regulations prohibiting such travel at their age.
To ensure proper vaccination and health status, puppies are typically only permitted entry into Germany at the age of 15 weeks.
Local veterinary authorities were immediately notified to provide care and medical attention to the vulnerable animals.
Huge fines
The driver, who now faces fines of up to €6,000, must present valid documentation before potentially regaining custody of the puppies.
Officials have expressed concern over the rising trend of illegally trafficked pets, noting the severe health risks posed by such actions. The fate of the puppies remains uncertain if the required conditions are not met, raising questions about their future care and potential rehoming.
