Each day, she searched for food, hoping someone might finally take her in. Her sad, hopeful eyes moved from one home to the next as she waited for even a small scrap to keep her going.
When Suzette Hall, founder of Logan's Legacy 29, received a photo of this desperate dog staring longingly through a gate, she knew she couldn't leave her to fend for herself any longer.
Rescue mission
Joined by her friend Mary Nakiso, Hall set off to find the dog, whom they later named Makena.
The two rescuers quickly found Makena, but capturing her was another struggle. They spent hours carefully trying to coax her into a trap, only for a neighbour to interfere, frightening Makena away.
But the next morning, Makena returned to the neighbourhood, finding comfort with a kind local resident, Janet, who had left her food and water. Hall saw this as a new opportunity and rushed back, working with Janet to gently coax Makena into a safe space.
Happy ending
Finally, after weeks of hardship, Makena allowed herself to be carried to safety. Hall's heart swelled as she saw the exhausted dog nestling into blankets in the car, her long search for safety over at last.
Makena was taken to Camino Pet Hospital for a full checkup, where she was found to be in good health. She's now resting in a caring home, enjoying warmth and companionship, and waiting for a forever family who will ensure she never has to beg for help again.
