Downing Street officials have prepared plans for the eventual death of Larry the cat, the "chief mouser" at Number 10.

At 17 years old, Larry is in his senior years, prompting the creation of protocols, known as "Larry Bridges," for announcing his passing.

Preparations in process

The codename, a nod to the procedures used for Queen Elizabeth II's death, reflects the seriousness of the planning. These arrangements focus on how to communicate the news when the time comes.

Larry, currently reported to be in good health, has been a fixture at Number 10 since being adopted from Battersea Cats and Dogs Home in 2011. Initially a pet for then-Prime Minister David Cameron, Larry stayed on after Cameron's departure, outlasting five subsequent prime ministers: Boris Johnson, Theresa May, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, and now Sir Keir Starmer.

Colourful career

Larry's tenure has not been without drama. He famously feuded with the Foreign Office's cat, Palmerston, who retired in 2019. There was also a notable altercation between Larry and Freya, the cat of former Chancellor George Osborne.

Larry's parody account on X (formerly Twitter), which boasts nearly 900,000 followers, humorously addressed the speculation, stating: "Plans are being made for how to announce my passing when that sad day comes. My wish is to be stuffed and placed above a fireplace in Downing Street as a constant reminder that the inhabitants shouldn't do anything foolish."
