Tributes have been paid to a beloved search and rescue dog this week, who tragically died on her sixth birthday, only a few months after saving a life.

The Northumberland National Park Rescue Team work tirelessly across the region, helping locate people who are lost or in distress.

A team of search and rescue dogs work alongside them, using their superior senses of smell and hearing to track down those in need.

First incident, first find

In May this year, Bramble made her first find, when she and her handler were called out to locate a vulnerable missing person in the Keswick area.

This was the English Shepherd's first ever rescue mission. "First incident, first find...a great result for our newly qualified Mountain Rescue Search Dog England Team", the team shared to Facebook.

Considering that after 2-3 years of training, many dogs will find two or three people in their entire career, this was a fantastic achievement for beginner Bramble.

A heartwarming tribute

Tragically, Bramble's work in search and rescue was short-lived.

She was diagnosed with leukaemia shortly after her first find. On her sixth birthday, with handler Andy by her side, she passed away.

Team leader Iain Nixon paid tribute to their four-legged team member, saying, "Bramble was a fantastic search dog and we are all incredibly sad she has died so suddenly".

A fundraiser has now been created in her memory.
