Veterinarians at the Central Oregon Humane Society are buzzing with excitement over Cinder, a rare tortoiseshell kitten.

But while the kitten looks like your average adorable tortie kitten, it's anything but.

Unicorn kitten

This kitten was born intersex, possessing both male and female genitalia. It was initially presumed female upon arrival at the shelter but soon surprised everyone during a routine spay surgery when male genitals were discovered.

Named Cinder after the revelation, the kitten has since found a new loving home after generating significant interest from potential adopters.

Bailey Shelton, clinic manager at the shelter, described Cinder's arrival as akin to "spotting a unicorn," highlighting the rarity of male tortoiseshell cats in the veterinary world.

This uniqueness stems from tortoiseshell colouring, typically found in females due to genetic factors.

Forever home for Cinder

Crystal Bloodworth, the shelter's medical director, explained that despite being neutered and appearing female as it grew up, Cinder was labelled male due to conventional animal gender perceptions. Crystal noted that Cinder likely possesses an XXY chromosome combination, contributing to its distinctive features.

While rare, there are known cases of intersex cats, mirroring similar occurrences in humans.

The attention sparked by Cinder's unique genetic makeup has led to multiple adoption inquiries, ultimately resulting in the kitten finding a loving new home. The shelter reported that Cinder is now enjoying a pampered life with new beds, toys, and plenty of affection.

Boy or girl, Cinder's is one of the most adorable kittens we've ever seen!
