To the dog walker's horror, three young, terrified cats were inside the soaked, taped-up box.
Chance discovery
The card box had been hidden in a hedge, far from a public footpath.
The dog walker took the cats home, gave them food and brought them to Ferne Animal Sanctuary.
It was obvious to sanctuary staff that the cats had been extremely neglected as they were underweight and covered in fleas.
The cats were very lucky to be found. Only by chance, the dog walker spotted the box and took a closer look. If they hadn't been found when they were, they would have likely died from starvation.
The cats, estimated to be around one to three years old, were not microchipped, and one was pregnant. Despite their ordeal, the cats are described as very friendly and appear well-handled and loved at some point.
Box soaked with urine
The box was completely soaked with the cats' urine, and as it was taped up, they had no chance of getting out.
How could anyone do that to three innocent animals?
The sanctuary praised the dog walker for spotting the box and taking quick action to help the cats.
Thanks to that Good Samaritan, the cats are now getting the care they need at the sanctuary and it's hoped they'll be back on their paws soon.
