Investigating further, she was shocked to find a small animal carrier inside.
Realising there was life within, she rushed it to the local animal shelter without delay.
Shocking discovery
At the shelter in Hildesheim, Germany, volunteers opened the container, revealing a heart-wrenching sight: a malnourished mother cat and her five tiny, flea-ridden kittens crammed inside, barely able to breathe.
With only small ventilation slots providing limited oxygen, the kittens, estimated to be just eight or nine weeks old, were at serious risk, especially in the sweltering August heat.
Despite their extensive experience, the shelter’s veterinarian was shocked at the cats’ pitiful condition, noting that the kittens required immediate special care, nutrition, and treatment.
Reward for information
Although their condition is slowly improving, some may not survive due to the severity of their neglect.
Thanks to a reward from the Hildesheim Animal Protection Association, the perpetrator has since been identified and will face charges under animal welfare laws.
