When a beloved dog passes away, it’s always hard for those who care for them. It’s especially devastating when the dog in question has never had a family to call his own.

A few weeks ago, an animal shelter in Berlin shared some devastating news.

Their longest-standing resident, a bully-type dog named George, had passed away.

Dog spends almost a decade in shelter

George had arrived at the shelter in 2012 after he was found tied to a post near a bank, all alone.

Despite his affectionate nature, adopters always overlooked George at the shelter. And over the years, as he got older and older, his chances of finding a family got slimmer.

Tribute to George

In the end, George was never adopted. But he still had a plentiful life, surrounded by all the animal shelter staff who loved him. In his lifetime, he was spoiled with cuddles and attention.

After his passing, the animal shelter laid out bouquets of flowers and photos of their beloved George in honour of him. In a heartbreaking Facebook post, they wrote:

“George has not found a home. But he had one with us. Take care, big guy.”

RIP, George.
