The 17-year-old was out on an evening walk in Hagen in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia when he noticed something or someone sitting on a park bench.
Shocking discovery
It was very late, around 10.30 pm, and freezing cold, so the youngster was surprised to see someone just sitting there on the bench. The teenager walked closer to the bench and couldn't believe his eyes when he realised what was there.
Tied to the bench in the freezing weather was a poor German Shepherd dog.
The young man had no idea how long the dog had been there, but it was clear that the pup had been abandoned. The teenager contacted the police, who came to collect the shivering animal.
Fortunately, a place was soon found with a local animal shelter that would take care of the pup until his owner was found or the dog was rehomed.
Cross-country mystery
But that's not the end of the story.
The shelter discovered that the rescued German Shepherd was called Pedro, and he was three-years-old. But what baffled shelter staff was that the dog was registered in Poland.
So who brought Pedro over to Germany, and what then happened to him? Shelter staff are hoping to answer those questions as their investigation into Pedro's past continues.
