Owners believe dog is 'cursed' and lock her away, leading to urgent rescue

By Ludivine Mazzotti•

Valie Jardin is a volunteer for the animal rescue organisation Chats Errants Argelès 66 Valie J. in Argelès-sur-Mer, France.

On 14 October, she shared the heartbreaking story of a young dog named Topaze.

At just one year old, the brave dog has already been through ordeals that no animal should ever suffer.

Severe neglect and cruelty

Topaze gave birth to two puppies. One was stillborn, and the other was born without hind legs and sadly did not survive. Her former owners decided she was "cursed" and locked her inside a tiny cage measuring just 21 square feet (2 square metres), with no access to the outside world and zero human contact.

According to a Facebook post by Valie Jardin, the previous owners had hoped to sell the puppies and feared she would give birth to more litters with health complications. The poor dog was fed only twice a week, living solely on scraps left over by her owners.

A horrific past and a long road to recovery

On top of putting her through such living horrors, her previous owners gave her a deeply insulting name. Fortunately, Valie Jardin managed to rescue the dog and pull her out of that nightmare.

Her new protector named her Topaze. The young dog still has a long way to go before she can trust humans again, as she remains extremely fearful and deeply traumatised. Her rescuer is being patient and gentle, giving her all the time she needs without rushing her or expecting instant trust.

Our hearts go out to Topaze, who is only one year old. She truly deserves to discover the world in a loving environment, surrounded by people who respect her pace and look after her. Hang in there, Topaze! We are all behind you and sending you so much love.
