Rescuers had planned the spaying operation for Prune, a lovely 7-year-old Labrador taken in two months earlier.
However, nothing went according to plan. The dog's foster family contacted the rescue centre with some incredible news: Prune had just given birth to 4 puppies!
An unexpected pregnancy?
Rescuers were completely stunned that they had not spotted her pregnancy. Looking back, however, it all made sense. Prune had spent most of her life at a breeding facility, where she was used for reproduction. When she arrived at the Hélios rescue centre, she weighed over 83 pounds. She certainly had saggy teats, but that was completely normal given her history of raising litters.
To prepare her for surgery under the best possible conditions, her rescuers decided to help her reach a healthier weight through a special diet and regular walks. Their efforts paid off quickly. Prune lost nearly 7 pounds, and her spaying appointment was booked. But the brave dog had quite a surprise in store for them!
An adorable family
Her foster family discovered three little girls and one little boy snuggled up beside their mum. One of the newborns was very cold, but her foster family managed to warm him up successfully. Fortunately, all four puppies soon started nursing.
Health checks confirmed that Prune and her little ones are doing well. She has also received calcium supplements and is now enjoying a diet tailored for nursing mothers. Right now, the rescuers' top priority is keeping Prune and her babies safe and sound. The pups will be ready for adoption in 3 months: we wish them every happiness as they grow up in their cosy home!
