A "free puppy" sign
In Tucson, Arizona, a young man was walking past a house with a "free puppy" sign outside. He knocked on the door, met the pup, fell in love instantly, and thought he had found his best friend for life. He named him Neo.
However, Neo quickly turned out to be very different from other puppies, reports The Dodo. Nervous and timid, he would mess in the car rather than outside. He wanted only one thing: his owner's company, and he wanted it all the time. When his owner went to work or study, he left him in the garden.
A pup who wanted to join the neighbours' dogs
That was when things got tricky. As the owner explained to Cate Salansky from the Wolf Connection organisation, Neo kept digging under the fence or jumping over it to play with the neighbours' dogs. The young man built a higher fence, but Neo simply gnawed through it to keep escaping.
At first, the neighbours didn't mind. But the animal's behaviour soon started to worry them. He made no attempt to interact with them, refused treats, and avoided eye contact. Meanwhile, his owner was starting to have doubts of his own. With his amber eyes and long, slender body, Neo looked remarkably like a wolf. Eventually, the neighbours brought him to the local shelter to figure out a solution with his owner.
"You do know that's not a dog?"
Maureen O'Nell, then director of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, remembers that morning vividly. Before opening to the public, she saw a couple bringing a long-legged canine to the door. It was his behaviour that caught her attention: Neo completely avoided human contact, while the couple looked utterly baffled. She approached them and asked, "You do know that's not a dog?" They admitted they had been wondering the exact same thing.
Because private wolf ownership is strictly regulated in Arizona, O'Nell contacted Wolf Connection, a wolf rescue centre and sanctuary in California, which agreed to take Neo in. She then spoke to the owner, who agreed it was the right decision, and she told him how proud she was of his choice.
A first night with the pack
At the sanctuary, Neo truly blossomed. The staff initially kept him isolated while waiting for the vets to give him a clean bill of health, but he hated being left out. He escaped from his isolation enclosure and headed straight for the habitat of Maya, the sanctuary's alpha female. On his very first night, he joined in with the pack's collective howl. He didn't wait to find out where he fit in: according to Wolf Connection, "he knew he belonged." Neo had finally found his pack.
