A lone dog in the jungle
Gigi is a little Chihuahua cross. Abandoned in the Thai jungle, alone, injured and dangerously ill, she only has one eye left. When Niall Harbison's team was called to her rescue, the little dog was carried over to the carers.
The charity Happy Doggo shared her story in a video posted on Instagram (@wearehappydoggo), as reported by Parade Pets. Gigi was so ill that her rescuers believe her owner simply left her to die.
A critical night
The veterinary team immediately sprang into action, treating Gigi's wounds and administering essential medicine. But her prognosis remained uncertain. Her rescuers had no idea if her little body would make it through the night, and time was running out. Gigi was taken straight to intensive care for treatment and rest, whilst the team kept watch and hoped for a miracle.
A small step, a huge victory
After plenty of rest, medication and loving care, Gigi gave her rescuers a moment they never saw coming. "She stood up all by herself," the charity wrote. For this brave little dog, it was a massive step forward, even if it might seem trivial. Standing on the examination table, she was cheered on by the whole team, who stayed by her side for the rest of her recovery. There is still a long way to go, but this moment gave her proud carers renewed hope.
Happy Doggo, a charity founded in 2021
Niall Harbison set up Happy Doggo in 2021 to rescue street dogs, from urban areas to the deep jungle. Every day, the charity neuters and feeds thousands of stray dogs. They recently opened a full medical clinic in tribute to Tina, his beloved Golden Retriever, alongside a retirement village for older dogs. It is thanks to this clinic that injured and sick dogs like Gigi can now receive life-saving care.
