Dan was one of the longest-serving residents at the Prince George's County Animal Shelter in Maryland, USA. Arriving on 2nd April, the two-year-old dog was described by volunteers as sweet, calm, and very affectionate, even if he could sometimes be reactive towards other male dogs.
The 29th of May was supposed to be his ”Gotcha Day”, the long-awaited day of his adoption. A shelter volunteer had prepared everything. She had even shared a photo of him waiting patiently in the yard, excited to meet his new family and start his new life. But as the hours ticked by, nobody arrived.
A sudden cancellation and a threat to his life
As the shelter's 6pm closing time approached, a reminder message was sent to the adopter. The reply was chilling. The person announced they were not coming, having chosen another dog from somewhere else.
In the blink of an eye, all their plans fell apart. On social media, the volunteer had to delete her planned celebratory posts one by one. This was a devastating blow because time was running out for Dan. Without an immediate adoption, he was about to be put on the euthanasia list due to a lack of space. To make matters worse, the shelter noted that he needed to be the only pet in the home, and he suffered from mild, chronic discomfort in his left leg.
A four-hour drive for a miracle
Fortunately, the volunteer's video about this heartbreaking let-down went viral, quickly racking up over a million views. Thanks to this wave of support, Dan's real family finally laid eyes on him.
Without hesitating for a second, these animal lovers drove for over four hours to meet him. It was love at first sight for everyone. However, just before they could set off, one final obstacle stood in their way: Dan tested positive for heartworm.
Despite the high cost and the intense medical treatment ahead, his new owners didn't bat an eyelid and stood by their commitment. Dan was finally able to hop into the car to start his new life, renamed Kronos.
