During this time, rescuer Zuly Ventura Vasquez couldn't stop thinking about the homeless stray dogs.
So, the rescuer and one of her teams took to the city streets to search for any dogs in need.
A heartbreaking discovery
It was during one of these missions that Zuly noticed a stray dog doing something that broke her heart. The mother dog was curled up, holding her puppy against her chest and between her paws, trying her best to keep him warm.
The dog was so emaciated that you could see all of her ribs. Zuly immediately contacted the Houston K-911 Rescue shelter, and the rescuers agreed to take in the two animals.
A new life
It was clear that the dog, now named Leia, had cared for her puppy all by herself throughout her life on the streets. But thankfully, she was finally in good hands. The photo of the mother and son immediately sparked a massive reaction from people on social media. Rescuers from the Up Pup and Away shelter saw the photo online and immediately offered to help find them a foster home.
Once their treatments were complete, the two dogs began their journey to Chicago to meet their foster family. Finally safe with her puppy, Leia started to gain weight and ask for belly rubs. Since then, the puppy, Luke, has found his forever home, and Leia is still waiting. We hope she finds her family very soon.
