Behind bars: heartbreaking video of a shelter dog facing loneliness

By Elodie Carpentier

Julie Saraceno, a volunteer at the Benton-Franklin Humane Society in Kennewick, Washington, USA, wanted to capture the loneliness of a rescue dog desperately waiting for her forever family.

Clover is a dog who has spent over 406 days in various shelters across the country. As reported by The Dodo, she was transferred to the Benton-Franklin Humane Society to receive specialised care for her severe skin allergies.

To help the public understand what these abandoned animals go through, Julie placed her phone in Clover's kennel before walking away and closing the gate. The footage speaks for itself.

A glimpse of her loneliness

In the video, you can see the dog's posture change dramatically as soon as she is left alone. "If you watch Clover’s tail, you see it slowly go down," explains Julie Saraceno. "When she thought I was never coming back, you could see all the sadness in her body language."

This low mood is not an isolated case, but it perfectly illustrates the depression that can affect long-term shelter animals.

Waiting for a family

Through this powerful video, Julie Saraceno hopes to challenge the stereotypes that often surround working or herding dogs in shelters, who can sometimes seem too boisterous in their kennels. "I would like people to understand that once these dogs have time to decompress and relax, that’s when their true personalities come out."

Clover is described as an extremely affectionate dog with people. She is now waiting for active owners who love the great outdoors, hiking, or playing Frisbee, and can offer her the outdoor life she so desperately needs.
