Woman convicted after leaving puppy in hot car while she went to theme park

By Elise Petter

The lure of the thrill rides proved stronger than her common sense.

A few days ago, security and police in Sandusky, Ohio, in the United States, had to respond to an emergency in the car park of the famous Cedar Point amusement park.

A puppy was found suffering a terrible ordeal, locked inside a vehicle that had turned into an oven.

A desperate race against time

After being tipped off, police discovered a German Shepherd puppy, estimated to be between 4 and 6 months old, confined in a Honda SUV. The conditions outside were already sweltering, with the thermometer reading around 28°C and an even higher heat index.

Through the passenger windows, which were only cracked open by about an inch, officers could feel the suffocating heat radiating from the car's interior. The poor puppy was huddled on the floor in the back, panting heavily. Worse still, there was no water bowl in sight. Facing the imminent danger of death from heatstroke, the police decided to force the vehicle open with the help of the park's maintenance crew.

Once freed from the car, the puppy, who was hot to the touch and severely dehydrated, was immediately given water before being taken to the park's on-site kennel for safety. The police tried to contact the owner by phone, but to no avail.

Thanks to surveillance cameras, the investigation then took a turn worthy of a police drama. The footage revealed the poor animal had been locked inside for over three hours. The videos also provided a clear description of the four people who had arrived in the vehicle. Armed with a photo of the group, a police officer entered the amusement park to track them down in the crowd.

From rollercoaster to prison cell

The driver of the vehicle was quickly located near the rides. The 22-year-old woman immediately admitted to being the driver and to leaving the puppy in the car.

Her fun day out came to an abrupt end: the suspect was handcuffed, removed from the park, and taken directly to the Erie County Sheriff's Office. Charged with animal cruelty, she was taken into custody at the county jail, with her bail set at $2,500.

This incident is a stark reminder that in the summer, leaving an animal in a car, even for a few minutes with the windows cracked open, is a criminal act that can be fatal.
