The video, posted by the account @lifewithelliebellie, has already racked up over 3.5 million views. It shows the young puppy enthusiastically jumping onto the couple's bed, heading straight for the side where his owner usually sleeps.
But upon realising the spot is empty, the puppy freezes. He pauses, sniffs the sheets, then turns his head towards his 'dad' with a look full of confusion and curiosity. Without a single bark, the little Golden Retriever seems to ask: "Where has she gone?".
"I cried": a heartfelt plea from a 'dog mum'
Seeing the clip, the owner's reaction was immediate. In the caption, she confessed with brutal honesty: "I'm never going on a girls' weekend again. I cried.".
This feeling of sadness resonated with thousands of users, many of whom admitted to feeling the same distress whenever they are away from their four-legged friends, even for a short time.
How do dogs really experience our absence?
While the video is heartbreaking for us to watch, science offers a slightly more nuanced view of how dogs perceive longing. Dogs don't experience 'missing' someone in the same complex way humans do. They associate their owners with routines, smells, and positive emotions.
When an owner is away, what they mainly notice is that a familiar presence is gone. This is why they often take comfort in items that carry our scent (like the bed or dirty laundry) to soothe themselves. Fortunately, these episodes of stress are usually brief, and the burst of joy when you're reunited quickly erases those moments of loneliness. For this owner, however, the next trip will no doubt involve a suitcase... with a puppy inside!
