A dog owner from Salzgitter, in Lower Saxony, Germany, was on his usual walk along the Ahrbeekweg at around 10 a.m. on Thursday, 9 April 2026. That morning, he suddenly spotted something in a deep ditch by the side of the path. A tiny, helpless little furry creature was curled up inside!
The man didn't hesitate for a second. Convinced he was saving an abandoned or lost puppy from certain death, he scooped up the tiny animal, held it protectively in his arms, and took it home. Little did he know he was making a terrible mistake.
A rude awakening at home
Once he was back home, the initial excitement of the rescue operation wore off. As the man examined his new charge more closely in the daylight, a sudden shock ran through him.
The pointed snout, the colour of the fur, the way it moved – the animal in his living room wasn't a dog at all! The supposed puppy, which he had so heroically pulled from the ditch, was in fact a wild fox cub.
Horrified, the man dialled the emergency number. Shortly afterwards, officers from the Gebhardshagen police station arrived, took charge of the young wild animal and, after an initial health check, immediately transported it to a professional wildlife rescue centre. The tiny creature was safe – but the drama was only just beginning.
A rescue that could be a death sentence
What the man, in his blind love for animals, didn't realise was that the young animal was in no mortal danger in the ditch. It's a completely normal strategy for wild animals to leave their young alone for hours while they search for food.
However, by picking it up, despite his good intentions, the man left his strong human scent on the fox cub. In the wild, this often leads to the parents rejecting their own offspring out of fear.
The rescuers therefore have an urgent warning for all walkers: if you find a baby animal alone in the wild, do not touch it under any circumstances. Instead, you should inform a wildlife rescue service!
