As she was heading to her car to pick up a parcel, she heard a meow.
She looked all around her car, but couldn't see a cat anywhere.
The source of the sound
Maria eventually convinced herself that the meows must be coming from further away. But as she walked along the pavement, she noticed a sealed plastic bag. As she got closer, she realised the meows were coming from inside the bag!
Before Maria could even bend down to open the bag, it started to move... There was definitely something alive inside! When she opened it, she discovered four newborn kittens. The poor little things were suffocating, and there was condensation on the inside of the bag...
Getting help
Maria quickly rescued the kittens and took them to the Humane Society of the North Bay shelter. Fortunately, they were all healthy, despite their terrible ordeal. The kittens were exhausted and in shock.
After the kittens received care at the shelter, Maria decided to foster them herself. She loved being a temporary foster mum and felt very "maternal" while looking after them. Eventually, the kittens moved to a long-term foster home, where they will stay until they are eight weeks old and ready for adoption. We wish them all the best for the future!
